Building Competence

Intercultural competence can be effectively measured with Milton Bennett's Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity (DMIS). Each move on the continuum above is a paradigm shift, a new way of understanding the world...because each of the benchmarks is a measure of the extent to which ‘the other' becomes humanized. This is the road everyone travels toward becoming at ease with people of all cultures and ethnicities, and milestones on the journey usually come with a personal crisis that moves us to a new level of awareness about ourself and others. The biggest shift is from ethnocentric to ethnorelative.

The term “integrated” at the end of the road describes a world citizen with the ability to both flow between all cultures comfortably, aware of the gifts others bring because of their differences.
